It was a frustrating night for Juventus as they were held to a 1-1 draw courtesy of a defensive howler from Arturo Vidal and some outstanding goalkeeping from Gianluigi Buffon.
Roma were in crisis following their 3-0 defeat to Fiorentina that saw three players see red. Coach Luis Enrique shuffled his deck following the suspensions of Bojan Krkic, Fernando Gago and Juan while tweaking his defence moving Danielle De Rossi to the centre of defence while youth product Federico Viviani debuted for the club in midfield. Juventus were unchanged with the exception of Mirko Vucinic who was out injured and missed the trip to his former club.
Roma were ahead after just 6 minutes following some truly woeful defending from Arturo Vidal. Francesco Totti's chipped cross was met by De Rossi whose weak volley was all set to be cleared by the Chilean but astonishingly, he missed the ball altogether!
Juve were quick to respond and moments later Stekelenburg was at full stretch to beat away Alessandro Matri's swerving effort.
Rodrigo Taddei did his best to impersonate Vidal with a fresh-air clearance bringing Stekelenburg into action to deny Estigarrabia. Vidal tried his best to make amends for his earlier mistake and his volleyed effort was just wide of the far post.
With Roma on the ropes, Vidal’s reverse pass was met by Simone Pepe who blasted his effort straight at Stekelenburg.
Roma started the second half the brighter and it took a fine interception from Andrea Barzagli to deny Osvaldo an easy tap-in.
Juventus drew level on the hour mark as Estigarribia’s horribly scuffed shot turned into an assist for Giorgio Chiellini’s header but Roma were awarded a penalty just a minute later. Arturo Vidal's sliding tackle on Lamela saw the referee point to the spot but Gigi Buffon was in fine form to deny Totti.
Juventus had their chances late on but Fabio Quagliarella's' chipped effort was held by Stekelenburg and moments later, Lichtsteiner poor finish found the side netting following some great build up play. |
