Juventus were left frustrated after failing to break down a resolute Siena side, capably marshalled by goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo.
Juve were still unbeaten heading into the tie and like Siena, they benefited from having played one less game after their midweek tie against Parma was postponed due to heavy snowfall.
Siena were missing the injured Zeljko Brkic and Francesco Bolzoni while their form away from home left a lot to be desired. The Bianconeri have managed only 4 points on their travels this season, losing their last 5 games on the road.
Juventus started the brighter and almost took the lead 15 minutes in but Arturo Vidal’s screamer was safely parried by Gianluca Pegolo. Siena went close just moments later but Mattia Destro’s daisy-cutter went wide of the near post.
Mirko Vucinic made his first start having returned from a month on the sidelines but failed to connect with the Pepe’s cross, instead scuffing the shot onto his own shin.
Lichtsteiner was a constant threat for Juve and he should have put the home side ahead just before the end of the first half. Andrea Pirlo’s perfectly weighted cross was met by the right back but his volleyed effort was safely held by Pegolo.
Simone Pepe was still recovering from injury and was subbed for Giaccherini at the start of the second half. Juve stepped up the pressure with Vucinic blazing his shot over the bar and Marchisio’s deflected effort going wide of the upright.
Andrea Pirlo was the next juve player to test Pegolo with a beautifully weighted free kick but the veteran keeper was alert to the danger.
Marco Borriello came on for Vucinic but headed his effort wide of the mark and moments later, there was controversy when Andrea Barzagli was carded for a foul outside the box but replays show he clearly played the ball.
There was yet more controversy when five minutes from time, Vergassola charged down a Chiellini cross in the box with his arm, but the referee waved play on.
