Despite
Tiago Mendes' red card, Juve snatched a stoppage-time equaliser through
Zdenek Grygera to cancel out Mario Balotelli's counter. The gap remains
10 points at the top, but with only six rounds remaining.
With
a 10-point gap going into this clash, the Derby d'Italia was more about
pride than actual Scudetto chances, but some slender hope remained
despite Juve dropping five points in two games against Chievo and
Genoa.
The
Bianconeri missed Momo Sissoko, Hasan Salihamidzic,
Cristiano Zanetti,
Albin Ekdal, Alex Manninger, Amauri and the suspended Mauro Camoranesi
and Claudio Marchisio. Inter had Douglas Maicon, Nelson Rivas, Luis
Jimenez, Amantino Mancini and Adriano ruled out, but
Julio Cesar
returned from a muscular setback.
Jose
Mourinho was looking for a sixth consecutive away victory and fielded
Esteban Cambiasso protecting the defence. Luis Figo was a surprise
starter and received a booking after two minutes for a sliding tackle
on Molinaro.
Mario
Balotelli thought he had scored after 10 minutes, as he shrugged off
two defenders and his shot from nine yards hit Gigi Buffon's arm to
slow it down. It was dribbling towards the empty net before Tiago came
sliding in for a decisive goalline clearance just before it crossed
over!
Juve
also threatened when Zdenek Grygera slipped during his header and
allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to clear. Del Piero put two weak chipped
passes into Julio Cesar's arms in quick succession, while Javier
Zanetti cut off Molinaro in the box.
Pavel
Nedved threaded through for Vincenzo Iaquinta, but Samuel came sliding
in to block the shot. A Del Piero free kick found Grygera totally
unmarked at the back post, but he shinned it over the bar.>
Del
Piero sent Marchionni clear with a slide-rule pass, but his first touch
let him down and Julio Cesar rushed out to deflect it wide off his
elbow on the half-hour mark!
Balotelli
knocked down for Stankovic to drill over and Nicola Legrottaglie was
carded for going through the back of Ibra.
Figo
dribbled through a crowd of players in the penalty area and Buffon came
tearing out to block at his feet, then Molinaro's clean sliding tackle
stopped Stankovic scoring on the follow-up.
Julio
Cesar palmed away a Del Piero free kick, then in the last kick of the
first half some chaotic defending stopped Iaquinta from tapping in.
Inter
were late coming out for the second half and the referee complained to
captain Zanetti, but they emerged eventually in dribs and drabs,
waiting extra for Balotelli to wander on to the field.
Buffon
blocked a Stankovic snapshot after Balotelli and Ibra had been crowded
out. Inter had a free kick in a promising position, but Ibrahimovic
slipped as he was running up and it rolled comically away.
Buffon
plucked an Ibrahimovic header out from under the bar on a set play,
while Julio Cesar needed two touches to control a Del Piero free kick
towards the near post.
Chivu
whipped a ball across the face of goal, but Balotelli was just a moment
too late to come sliding in for the finish. Paolo De Ceglie replaced
Molinaro in the first substitution of the game.
Cordoba
and Figo clattered into each other on a corner, almost letting
Chiellini through for a goal. From that corner, Juve lost the ball
following complaints for an alleged Chivu foul on Chiellini and Inter
scored with a classic counter-attack. With four passes they got it up
to Balotelli for a cool finish with the inside of his foot from nine
yards, as Sulley Muntari's pass from the left went past lone defender
Grygera.
Juve
fought back with Cordoba charging down Del Piero's effort. Balotelli
risked a red card when he twice visibly insulted the referee for
awarding a free kick against him, but the official only showed the
yellow. Moments later SuperMario shoved over a Juve man and his
teammates shouted at him to calm down.
Marchionni
sprinted past Stankovic down the right and was clear on goal, but once
again hesitated and allowed Julio Cesar to block with his body.
Chiellini's
audacious overhead kick was charged down and David Trezeguet replaced
Marchionni, moving Iaquinta towards the right.
The
tension was sky high and Tiago lost his temper spectacularly. He was
shown a straight red card after hacking down Muntari and Balotelli in
quick succession, both utterly foolish tackles in midfield. This is
becoming a habit for Juventus, who had Mauro Camoranesi sent off last
week at Genoa.
Buffon
flew to fingertip Stankovic's curler over the bar with his trailing
hand. Del Piero was limping slightly and made way for Giovinco in the
final minutes.
Julio
Cruz came off the bench and almost immediately brought a fingertip save
out of Buffon, hoping to add to the nine goals he has already scored
against Juve in his career. Ibra had penalty appeals waved away in
stoppages for a slight contact with Legrottaglie.
It
still wasn't over, though, as 10-man Juve equalised! A Giovinco corner
kick found Grygera's header from six yards to leave Julio Cesar
stranded!
The
Bianconeri fought back with sheer pride and even went for the winner in
the final moments, notching up more corners, but so did Inter with
Cambiasso closed down at the near post |
