Juventus suffered another heavy defeat this week as a Nene' scorcher and Alessandro Matri nutmeg gave Cagliari their first win in this fixture for a decade.
The Bianconeri needed a boost after their midweek 2-0 Champions League loss in Bordeaux, but an injury crisis meant Alessandro Del Piero was their only fit striker, but was still benched along with Sebastian Giovinco. Amauri had to grit his teeth to play through the pain of a muscular problem, as David Trezeguet, Vincenzo Iaquinta and full-back Fabio Grosso didn't make the trip. Cagliari's four-match winning streak was ended in a 4-3 blaze of glory at Milan last week, but hadn't beaten Juve here since 1998-99. Lino Marzoratti and Fabio Canini are injured.
Cagliari had the first real chance, but Andrea Lazzari could not get clean enough contact on Jeda's cross when he had a free header from six yards.
Cagliari were angry as the referee stopped play for Momo Sissoko's challenge on Cossu when Jeda was through on goal. From that free kick Gigi Buffon only parried a fierce Daniele Conti effort and Christian Poulsen cleaned up.
The Sardinians had the better of the first half and took the lead in absolutely spectacular fashion! A free kick was taken quickly, but Nene' unleashed a blockbuster from over 20 metres at a tight angle that flashed in to the near top corner. The power and angle left Buffon unable to make contact.
Diego was again out of sorts and flashed a right-foot shot wide and, although they tried to push forward more after the goal, Juve barely threatened Federico Marchetti.
Amauri thought he had equalised with a diving header on Martin Caceres' cross four minutes after the restart, but the goal was disallowed for a tight offside position.
At the other end moments later Cagliari wanted a penalty for Caceres' handling offence to parry a Cossu pull-back, but they were extremely close and it struck the Spaniard on the elbow as it bounced.
Giorgio Chiellini needed treatment for a nosebleed and Alessandro Del Piero finally came off the bench for Claudio Marchisio. Caceres timed his tackle perfectly to stop Alessandro Matri when clear on goal after a smart counter.
Amauri was denied a very strong penalty shout on 70 minutes, as he appeared to be nudged in the back by Pisano when trying to get on the end of a Diego cross from the right, but he was only booked for dissent.
Juventus were now pinning Cagliari back into their own half and laying siege to the box. Del Piero's overhead kick didn't make enough contact, but the cross carried on for Cristian Molinaro's half-volley charged down by Pisano at full stretch.
Del Piero's free kick squirmed through a sea of legs at the near post to find Chiellini, but Federico Marchetti performed a stunning point-blank reaction save. Cagliari cleared their lines to spark a very dangerous counter, forcing Buffon to come flying halfway up the field to clear like a sweeper.
Juve were pouring forward, but naturally this left space at the other end for the counter and Alessandro Matri took full advantage. He ran on to a long pass, dribbled past Fabio Cannavaro and nutmegged World Cup winner Buffon!
It still wasn't over, as Del Piero turned a free header over and Diego hit a tame effort straight at the goalkeeper.
