Juventus take a 3-1 first leg lead over Fulham thanks to Nicola Legrottaglie, David Trezeguet and a Jonathan Zebina screamer. The Premier League side did grab an away goal with the aid of a lucky deflection.
The Bianconeri missed Gianluigi Buffon, Amauri, Giorgio Chiellini and the suspended Felipe Melo, while Alessandro Del Piero, Mauro Camoranesi and Vincenzo Iaquinta were only fit for the bench. Roy Hodgson's Fulham were fresh from knocking holders Shakhtar Donetsk out and made this trip without John Pantsil, Andrew Johnson and the suspended Danny Murphy, so Jonathan Greening stepped in. Paul Konchesky made his comeback after two months.
David Trezeguet had the first chance after eight minutes, as his glancing header from Claudio Marchisio's cross was flapped off the line by Mark Schwarzer at full stretch. From the resulting corner, Juventus broke through with Nicola Legrottaglie left completely unmarked for a powerful free header.
Fulham should have equalised when Damien Duff pulled back from the byline, but Simon Davies could only manage a fresh-air shot from a very promising position.
Antonio Candreva blasted over, then Trezeguet also drilled off target after Marchisio won back possession in the final third.
Juventus doubled their lead with a wonderstrike from Jonathan Zebina. The full-back pushed up to support Candreva, skipped between two defenders and smashed a right-foot angled drive that fizzed across the face of goal and in off the inside of the far post. There was little Schwarzer could do against the ferocity of that shot from outside the box.
Marchisio blasted over, but Fulham pulled one back with a stroke of luck. A Davies free kick bounced off Zoltan Gera on to Dickson Etuhu, whose wayward shot took a massive deflection off Legrottaglie to roll into the net with Alex Manninger stranded.
It could so easily have been 2-2 on 40 minutes. A Fulham corner found Brede Hangeland's header from six yards and Manninger flew to flap it off the line so Fabio Grosso could hoof it clear.
Bobby Zamora's fine volley was straight at Manninger from a dangerous ball over the top. Gera also hit it at the goalkeeper from a tight angle after good build-up from Zamora.
In first half stoppages Juventus had a great chance too. Chris Baird was caught out by Diego, the pass for Trezeguet was poorly cleared for Grosso and a wonderful Schwarzer save at the top near corner.
From the resulting set play, Trez hit the near post and volleyed in the rebound across to the far upright with Hasan Salihamidzic swerving out of the way to let it through.
Camoranesi made his comeback for Salihamidzic and the Bianconeri passed the ball around very well to earn a corner, which Legrottaglie nodded over.
Dempsey made his comeback two months after a knee injury, while Iaquinta also came off the bench after almost five months out.
Gera soared above the crowd, but his header from a free kick was well wide. Legrottaglie was booked for a handling offence and will be suspended for the second leg.
Camoranesi chested down a cross for Iaquinta to volley well over from the D. Momo Sissoko replaced Christian Poulsen, but Zamora was halted for an incorrect offside flag when in a dangerous position.
Greening hacked down Candreva and the yellow card rules him out of the second leg.
In the final minute Diego unleashed a snapshot from 20 metres that dipped viciously to bounce right in front of Schwarzer, who did well to palm it round the post. From Camoranesi's corner, Iaquinta nodded wide. |
