In amongst all the talk of failed transfer campaigns, national teams and club fixtures we are reminded of what Juventus football club is all about. 21 years to the day, Gaetano Scirea tragically lost his life in a road accident in Poland while returning from a scouting for the club in 1993.
In his time at Juventus, Scirea played 397 times and netted 24 goals. He took the role of 'libero', the adaptable, verstaile centre back, to another level with defensive displays that earned him plaudits from around the world. He won seven Scudetti, two Coppa Italia titles, a Champions League, an Intercontinental Cup, a Cup Winners' Cup, a European Super Cup and a UEFA Cup. In short, he one of only 5 players to have won all international trophies for football clubs.
He was and always will be 'Il Capitano'. |
