A look at some players who have played for rival teams

As football fans, we tend to get very attached to the stars of our favourite teams. We begin to love the players, see them as icons, as idols- representative of the ambition, desires and aspirations of the club they play for.

However it doesn’t all ways end that way, sometimes, on rare occasions that player you may idolise will jump ship, swap colours and move to the clubs rival team, resulting in him being regarded as a traitor and the most hated person in that area. Nonetheless it does happen and here’s is the list of footballers playing for both rival teams.

Gonzalo Higuaín – Napoli to Juventus

Higuaín absolutely smashed in the goals for Napoli, so much so that he attracted every big club in the world. Some favoured him to leave Italy and was rumoured to take his talents to China or England, but in the end, he ended up staying in Italy and joined Napoli’s title rivals and Series A winners Juventus.

Carlos Tevez – Man United to Man City

Ever since Tevez arrived in England, he’s constantly been in the thick of things on and off the pitch. After moving from West Ham to Man United, the Argentine spent two seasons with the Red Devils, winning six trophies and scoring 34 goals, however he was not needed in Sir Alex Fergusons plans and Tevez ended up joining United’s fierce rivals Manchester City.

Sol Campbell – Tottenham to Arsenal

After Sol progressed through Spur’s academy, he cemented himself as a Tottenham regular capping over 250 appearances for the club, becoming the captain, one of their best players and a hero to the fans. That soon came to an abrupt end after he decided to move across north London in search of champion’s league football. He became one of most hated players in the eyes of spurs fans and the worse things about this move? It costed absolutely nothing! Now that’s a kick in the teeth.

Luis Figo – Barcelona to Real Madrid

Fans did not like this one! Figo actually had a pig’s head thrown at him whilst he was on the pitch as a protest at their transfer. The Barca fans felt very betrayed that Figo made the jump from the Catalan giants to bitter rivals Real Madrid in 2000.

Ashely Cole / William Gallas – Arsenal to Chelsea

Ashely Cole or ‘Cashley’ as he is called by Arsenal fans is probably one of the most hated players to be see in arsenal eyes. Especially when it came out that Cole almost crashed his car because he was shocked by heat the ‘lack’ of money he was being offered by Arsenal in his new contract -£55-000-a-week is apparently a lack of money. After Chelsea offering more money, he went from north to west London with William Gallas going the other way.

Wayne Rooney: Everton to Manchester United

Despite declaring ‘once a blue always a blue’ Rooney was more than happy enough to travel east of the border and wear red. United paid a staggering £25.6milion for his services. Every time Everton and United play, he is a constant target for fans… which I think will never die out.
