Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt is happy with his choice to join Juventus after having the opportunity to sign for basically any of Europe’s top clubs during the summer.
De Ligt had some early tests at his new club after making the move from Ajax but he claims to be very pleased with his decision.
The 2018 Golden Boy earned himself the captain’s armband at his former club after putting multiple mature performances in and proving his worth for both club and country. The player, who only turned 20 last month, was a target for European giants Barcelona and Manchester United but opted to move to Turin, with 75 million going the other way.
Of course, the opportunity to team up with football icon Cristiano Ronaldo had something to do with it, but the transmission wasn’t a smooth one as he’s spent some time warming the bench this season and has to deal with the challenge of learning a new language as he settles in.
“There have been many changes but it is going well, I am really happy with the choice I made in the summer when I signed for Juventus,” he told Tuttosport at the FIFA Best Awards on Monday.
“I am learning Italian. Both the language and the football, very different, compared to the Dutch one. I am very happy to be here.”
De Ligt joined compatriot and Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk in the FIFPro World XI for 2019 and was extremely proud of himself after being recognized among some of the best players in the world.
“It’s really nice to receive an award with the votes of the other players, it’s a great recognition,” he continued. “It was an exciting and enormously proud moment to get on stage with those players, some of whom are literally living legends.
“It is a great honour to be here. I was lucky enough to have played with both Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo, but frankly I can’t choose between the two.”
Barca’s Lionel Messi beat Ronaldo and Van Dijk to the FIFA Best Mens award on the night following the defender picking up the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award and being named the UEFA Defender of the Year last month.
De Ligt will hope he can help Juve win another Scudetto at the end of the season and the Serie A giants are 8/15 favourites with William Hill. Antonio Conte’s joining Inter leaves the NerrazurriJuve’s biggest challengers and the San Siro side are currently sat atop the league table, one point ahead of I Bianconeri. Bet365 has them at 10/3 to dethrone Juventus while Napoli are 4/1 with Ladbrokes.
Ronaldo is the favourite to score the most Serie A goals at 9/4 with Skybet, who have Romelu Lukaku at 9/2 and Ciro Immobile at 6/1.
If De Light has his way during the season, though, the accolade may very well go to his teammate as he hopes to be a rock at the back for his new team.
