Paolo di Canio firmly believes there is no justification for footballers engaging in gambling, particularly in the wake of the recent scandal that has rattled Italian football, involving Nicolo Fagioli.
Fagioli voluntarily presented himself for questioning by the authorities and cooperated in providing information regarding other players involved in the matter. Consequently, the young player received a seven-month ban, and additional players are currently in discussions with the prosecutors regarding the case.
In a show of support, Juventus has decided to continue paying Fagioli his full salary and allow him to participate in team training as usual. Nevertheless, Di Canio lacks sympathy for players who gamble and openly criticises both those involved in such activities and those who offer them support.
The outspoken former Italian footballer said, as quoted by Calciomercato:
“You are idiots! If you bet on football you’re empty, you’re stupid. There’s no need to justify those who bet! “.
Juve FC Says
Di Canio is being too harsh here, Fagioli is a young man and with the right support can and should get his life and career back on track.
Hopefully, the midfielder will get all the help he needs and return to the squad as a very different player.
