Portuguese youngster João Félix might become the most expensive football player of the year. At the age of 19, the striker is already courted by several high-profile European football clubs. He has a £120 million buyout clause at Benfica, his current team, a sum several major teams – including Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Manchester United – seem to be willing to pay for the youngster to strengthen their ranks. After all, Félix already scored 15 times and assisted 9 times for Benfica, including a hat-trick in the Europa League against German team Eintracht. It doesn’t take a bookmaker at Betway to tell that Félix has a bright future as a footballer and he might become the most expensive player of the year if everything goes well.
Until the teams finish their negotiations, let’s take a look at the three most expensive football players who switched clubs this year.
Frenkie de Jong
Dutch player, Frenkie de Jong is one of the most promising midfielders of our times. He is well-known and appreciated for his passing range, his dribbling skills, his control of the ball, and intelligence he shows during the matches. He made his debut at Willem II in 2015 but the team let him go for just 1 euro in 2016. After joining Ajax, he flourished, becoming one of the best young players at the time. This January, he signed with Spanish club Barcelona – the club paid 75 million euros to have him.
Lucas is a French-born, second-generation professional footballer – his father played with Olympique Marseille. He moved with his family to Spain at the age of 4 and started playing football at the age of 5. At the age of 11, he joined the youth academy of Atlético Madrid, from where he rapidly progressed to the first team – he made his senior debut in 2014. After more than 100 competitive appearances with the Spanish team and playing with the French national team at the World Cup last year, the defender has signed with German club Bayern Munich – he will leave in exchange for a club record fee of €80 million.
The most expensive player of the year 2019 so far is Eden Hazard, the Belgian professional footballer who has played with Chelsea until the end of this Premier League season. After five years with French team Lille, he joined Chelsea for a £32 million transfer fee in 2012. While there, he played for Belgium’s national team at the 2018 World Cup, winning the Silver Ball and the award for the competition’s top assist provider.
Just a few days ago, it was announced that Eden will join Real Madrid beginning with the 2019-2020 football season on a contract that cost the Spanish team €100 million.
