Sky Sport Italia report that Juventus have a deal with Arsenal to sign Wojciech Szczesny for €16m.
The Polish international goalkeeper has spent the last two years on loan at Roma, enjoying his strongest campaign in the 2016/17 season.
Sky journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Juve are looking for a long-term successor to Gigi Buffon and Szczesny is the primary target.
Juve could land the 27-year-old for €16m with a four-year contract for the player worth €4m net per season.
Sportitalia also lead with the same story, reporting that the Bianconeri have been working on a deal for Szczesny since March.
Well, I must concede with mild bemusement…the story seems to be gathering steam, my friends. And whilst I am no fan of that particular Pole, due to his character which has often proved annoying, I suppose if Neto is leaving we need an experienced number two, ideally who knows the league and has played at a high level and won’t cost the Earth as we try to position our ideas for Buffon’s heir at clubs where they gain great development and mature, not too far from home…then…the story has some logic.
He is evidently an experienced replacement for our experienced back-up. Not ear-marked as Buffon’s successor. Who will certainly be our starting keeper next year. Strange decision for the Pole in terms of his chances of appearing at the World Cup, though I can assume it matters not whether he plays regularly , the Number 1 spot for country must be concreted.
He wasn’t a bad keeper in the PL, that is true. So as a backup for Gigi it makes sense. But I can’t see why he would want to sit on the bench. That is almost a role in itself, with those in it knowing the deal – good pay, little playing time. Donnarumma is the replacement we need. Young, talented and Italian.
