Giorgio Chiellini could be out for up to six months after suffering a serious knee injury in today’s training session.

The veteran defender has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will require immediate surgery.

A statement on the clubs official site confirmed the news earlier today:

“During today’s training, Giorgio Chiellini sustained a sprain of his right knee.

“The diagnostic tests performed at J|Medical showed a lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament. It will be necessary to have surgery in the coming days.”

Sky Sprot Italia are already suggesting that the injury could mean at least a 4-6 month lay off for the club captain.

The injury is expected to keep Daniele Rugani at the club, despite reports of a supposed loan move or sale in the final days of the transfer window.
