Juventus have reportedly agreed a deal for Paris Saint-German’s Edinson Cavani, but it’s dependant on Paul Pogba being sold.

Today’s Quotidiano Sportivo reports that an agreement has been reached for Cavani to join Juventus in the summer, costing somewhere in the region of €40-45m, with the player being offered a yearly salary of €5.5m.

Il Quotidiano Sportivo goes one step further to suggest that a text message was sent by an ‘unidentified Juventus director’ reports that reads “We’ve signed Cavani, it’s all done, it’ll only fall through if we don’t sell Pogba.”

The article doesn’t specify whether or not Pogba will be sold to PSG directly in order for the deal to go through.

La Stampa are leading with a similar story but they stipulate Cavani’s deal will include a five-year contract and that both clubs will continue to deny the agreement until the summer.

You can tell the silly-season is almost upon us when stories like this start to circulate, especially given that Cavani stated just yesterday that he intends to see out the reminder of his contract at PSG which runs until 2018 (Personally, i thought the inclusion of a text message from a Juventus director in the story was a nice touch).

What’s the likelihood of such a deal going through? Ultimately, it will be depend on the future of two players – Carlos Tevez and Paul Pogba. Given that Carlitos has stated on more than one occasion that he intends to play for Boca once more, it’s quite possible that Juve are lining up a replacement. There’s been rumours of Tevez wanting to return to Argentina this summer rather than seeing out the remaining year on his current Juventus contract so anything is possible.

As for Pogba, we all know he’ll be linked to every ‘major’ club out there from Chelsea to Barcelona (despite their transfer-ban). There’s every chance that Juventus might cash-in on him, while they know they can get a good price, and use the funds to strengthen other areas of the squad. That said, Juve are hardly in a weak financial position and while the team needs some freshening up in certain positions, it’s not like a huge refit of players is required.

The sceptic in me likes to go back to the facts:

  1. Juve’s salary structure doesn’t exceed €6m per year and Cavani currently earns in excess of €10m, why would he take such a drop, just to return to Italy?
  2. Juve have rarely paid in excess of €20m for a player so €45m seems a tad unrealistic, even if they’re getting a player in his prime.

Make of all this what you will, but be assured, we have a whole summer of this ahead of us….and it’s only April.
