Gianluigi Buffon reiterated his desire to see out his career at Juventus, declaring “Even if I were to be offered twice my salary elsewhere, I’m staying at Juve for life.”

The 38-year-old goalkeeper recently broke Serie A records and explained his commitment to Juventus while touching on the depression he dealt with throughout his career.

“Even if I don’t have the same passion, which normally decreases a little, I still enjoy the challenge,” Buffon told So Foot.

“Even if I were to be offered twice my salary elsewhere, I’m staying at Juve for life. To be part of it makes me proud because they have a value. And certain values seem outdated nowadays.

“I want to play at this level until I’m 40 and then that’s enough. But with the ambition to reach the top.”

Gigi went on to explain how he overcame the depression that he encountered during his illustrious career.

“Depression can happen to anyone,” he said.

“For me, it was almost in a trivial way. At 26 I realised that the age of being carefree was over and this transition to adulthood caused what I experienced.

“But I didn’t take medicine because I don’t want to be dependent on anything or anyone. I tried to find the way out on my own, speaking with some friends.

“At Euro 2004 I was very distressed and it was because of talent and luck that I had a good match. It finished 0-0, but I was happy because I had resolved my problem.

“In my day we played in groups and convivially. Now the youngsters are on their computers and iPads and in a footballing sense imagination, inspiration and talent have been anesthetised.”

Buffon also discussed Bayern Munich keeper Manuel Neuer who has been lauded for his ‘sweeper-keeper’ style of play.

“What Neuer does, I was already doing at Parma under Malesani when we won the UEFA Cup, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana,” Buffon explained.

“I’ve always had the predisposition to play with my feet. The truly new thing was introduced by Barcelona a decade ago, by integrating the goalkeeper into the construction of the game.

“Is the Italian school of goalkeepers lost? If we make 100 saves and one error, the rest of the week will be spent talking just about the error, making you go crazy.

“But abroad you can make a mistake and develop calmly. With us if you make a mistake, you’re screwed. Those of us who stay at the top are very strong psychologically as well.”
