Juventus could bring Emre Can to Turin in January by offering Liverpool somewhere in the region of €6m-10.
The Liverpool midfielder is out of contract in June 2018 and will be able to talk to other clubs in the January transfer window.
Accoring to Corriere dello Sport, the German international is wanted by Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, however the Bianconeri are thought to be in the lead to sign him.
In an effort to ward off possible competition from Premier League clubs, Juventus may look to bid €5m-6m to bring the midfielder to Turin ahead of plans.
Gazzetta Dello Sport follow suit and suggest Juve will aim to sign Can ahead of schedule, although they report that Juve will bid €19m.
Offer 12-14 mill and secure him. Keep Sandro and Dybala.
He has nowhere near proven his worth as much as the much more experienced Matuidi. Yet he is 7 years younger and I will hope (if we do sign him) that he has plenty of potential to improve, for he is rarely impressive, he rarely sticks out as one of the strongest players on the pitch.
Our interest in him is likely because of his contractual status. Liverpool have achieved very little whilst he has been at Anfield. On the other hand he has been a regular part of the German national team set-up all throughout youth and then at senior level. And he is well regarded by a fair few in the game.
For free, he would seem the obvious replacement for Sami Khedira in the Summer. Though I will hope to see Sturaro loaned or sold in January, just to give the lad chance to resurrect his career, which the last season or so has been more than truncated, it has gone backwards.
The rumoured 5-6m offer in January for Can is amusing, yet it does make us seem a little Del-boy ish, lacking class in some way. Liverpool are not short of a bob or two. Unless they have a replacement lined up for Can they would laugh at such a derisory offer…I am unsure of this year’s TV money, but domestically speaking, solely for domestic coverage, they made 150m pounds last season. We earned around 103m pounds for the same. Which illustrates the immense importance of our CL campaign. And also other marketing opportunities.
In short, it is not just Man City and Man U who can easily outspend us in transfer and wages, as well as have the allure of living in England with mega money to play with, it is many teams below.
We have three right backs presently. De Sciglio, Lichsteiner and Howedes. I doubt we will see any movement there but Stephan leave. Unless Howedes proves a complete waste of time.
It is more likely we will need a LB, as Asamoah may leave and even Sandro…Caldara should come i, at the expense of who I am presently unsure, though it could be Rugani. Other than which, Sturaro and Khedira out, and perhaps Dybala, which will bring in a large chunk of gold and a stellar new signing. Cannot see much more movement than this, at least presently, though if Bentancur has not progressed and Mandragora has continued his impressive form for Crotone, then bring the latter in, send the former out on loan…
Rumours of Draxler wanting a move, so why on earth we would turn down a second chance to sign him I do not know GP. Mr Can just seems yet another so-so squad player we can get free or cheap, as opposed a player we need. With Bentacur, Matuidi and perhaps Mandragora and Marchisio handling more mundane midfield duties the opportunity to get a talented attacking midfielder seems one we should not miss (again) if true. Plus he has a cool name like a bond villain….. I’ve seen rumours of Pjaca being available for sale too.
The economics of this move don’t make sense to me. To be precise, how are we getting a young, well-known, solid midfielder free from an EPL team?
1) If Emre Can is so good, Liverpool, who just spent €85m on Virgil Van Dijk and another ~€75m on Naby Keita, would have no financial limitations to offer him whatever salary he demanded instead of letting him walk for free. I doubt it is a personality issue given he seems pretty professional and Klopp probably has an affection for a German player. He’s versatile. He has played the most number of minutes amongst Liverpool’s midfielders. Maybe he’ll be considered surplus once Naby Keita arrives next season.
2) Can’t they give him “a contract extension” and sell him for a healthy transfer fee?
3) Aren’t there teams out there willing to pay him more than we are?
4) Why weren’t there teams willing to pay Liverpool a transfer fee to acquire him before the Bosman rule kicked in?
It doesn’t add up for me and I won’t be surprised if it falls through for any number of reasons.
He’s not very good – not a ton of big clubs scrambling to sign him? He knows he can get a good deal from Juve and win some stuff too? Lots of reasons Jack, we may never know why officially. Same as with Khedira, Real let him go. I think we can see why now 😉
I find that hard to believe. He’s a solid, young midfielder valued at €22m and Liverpool are letting him walk for free? The comparison between Can and Khedira stops at the fact that both are German midfielders that are fundamentally sound, but not flashy in any way. Other than that you can’t compare Can with Khedira b/c Khedira was 28, very injury-prone, getting no time with Mourinho, recovering from a serious injury when we got him. Emre Can is 23, very healthy, with lots of upside, getting the most number of minutes amongst Liverpool midfielders. Very different situations.
Not similar! You having a laugh. Liverpool are not overflowing with great midfielders, but even then Can is rarely if ever a game changer for them. Sometimes he is downright poor. Just like Khedira they will let him go for free because a). He can’t be forced to sign a new deal, so that leaves them screwed anyway and b). Liverpool are not losing a player who is irreplaceable. Especially if they have £100+ million coming in for Coutinho. Just like Sami really – did Real miss him for even a minute? No. Sanchez / Ozil walking for free is a huge catastrophic loss for Arsenal, Can leaving Liverpool is nothing like it. He may still sign for them again if enough money is forthcoming, but if he wants to win something significant then Liverpool isn’t the place to be. Maybe he wants to win something?
Still not convinced about this deal. The only credible reason for Can moving to Juve for free is if he desperately wants to leave Liverpool and they can’t do anything about it. Otherwise, letting a €22m man walk for free is hard to believe. EPL teams are loaded with money, but even they should be capable of making better business decisions.
